Students' Approach to study

February 04, 2024 By Admin

In this article, I will discuss the approaches adopted by the students in their field of study to achieve their desired goal. Actually, every student has a different approach to studying, and their success depends on this. The approach is one of the most important steps to achieving success.

On the basis of my experience and observations, these approaches can be divided into five types:

  • Seasonal approach
  • Surface Approach
  • Deep approach
  • Competitive approach
  •  Achievers' approach

SEASONAL APPROACH

This approach is often used by students during college or academic study. They start their studies after the announcement of the exam date. Sometimes it works even in getting good marks, but overall, it does not work in the learning process.

It can be compared with seasons. When the time of examinations or the season of exams comes, students start their studies. It can be very dangerous for students because they do a very selective study, e.g., recite some selected questions or questions from last year's question papers. Therefore, they learn and understand nothing.

If all the approaches are compared to each other, it can be easily observed that this kind of approach is the most usable among the students, and I feel that this approach definitely plays a major role in the low success rate of Indian students.

A New Delhi-based employment solutions company, Aspiring Minds, conducted an employability-focused study based on 150,000 engineering students and found barely 7 percent suitable for core engineering jobs.[i] (Chakrabarti, 2016)

In this article, various reasons were shown behind this, but I think behind the lack of skill in students and sometimes in teachers, this approach plays a crucial role because, with the help of this approach, students do pass their academic exams, but in the field of practical life or in professional life, they fail.

Surface Approach

According to its name, this kind of approach towards studying works on the surface, which means a student who adopts this approach doesn't try to learn new things and instead tries to collect information and available material and recite them. This approach encourages students to be passive learners, never enjoy social learning, and see learning as coping with tasks so they can pass assessments and examinations. But sometimes it may be the pre-step of a deep approach

Deep Approach

This approach is mostly followed by scientists and researchers, or by those who want to be scientists or researchers. In this approach, students seek the meaning of the materials they get to study and try to understand the subject and correlate it with others. This approach inculcates genuine curiosity in students to learn something and develop their point of view.

It is often used in developing things and new ideas in the field of research, where deep analysis is needed.

Competitive approach

This approach is often seen in students who are preparing for some type of competitive examination. This type of approach promotes a feeling of comparison. Students who follow this approach want to be at the top of any competition. They are aware of their target but sometimes their concentration increases towards competitors instead of their study

Therefore, they work hard but often fail to achieve success

Achievers 'approach

This approach is followed by the students to achieve their set target; that's why it is called an achiever's approach. To achieve success, the most important things are to set a target and promote the best strategy under proper guidance. This approach uses both surface and deep approaches according to their needs.

Students who follow this approach:

  • They are very aware about their set target
  • Understand the role of guidance
  • Make proper strategy or plan
  • Follow time management
  • Prepare the whole syllabus, and never follow seasonal preparation.
  • Never pay any attention to degrading others, and concentrate on continuous preparation.
  • This approach actually encourages people to work hard but in very smart way

We talked about different approaches or styles of study applied by students. From a student's point of view, students never think about these approaches. Only one thing is always moving in his mind: to qualify for the upcoming examination. Now, proper guidance plays the most important role. A guide or teacher can show him or her the best approach to studying.
